Bald Head Island Country Club
1099 Indigo Plantation Drive
Experience golf as an adventure and tour of nature rather than simply a challenging game as you explore the scenic nature winding along the Bald Head Island Golf Club. The private 18-hole championship golf course, available for non-member play, stretches along the pristine expanses of the 6,855 yard course. This par 72 course offers players a chance to sightsee along the salt marshes and more than 800 acres of lush maritime forest while experiencing an award winning round of golf. The beauty and serenity of the background include fifteen fresh-water lagoons and tidal creeks placed along the course, and if you’re lucky, you might even pass by nesting areas of sea turtles.
The world renowned landscape architect George Cobb designed this course, carving out spectacular greens and fairways amidst the rich coastal terrain along Bald Head Island. He was the lead consultant to the Augusta National Golf Course for 20 years and brought his full talents and creativity to the structure of this course. The architect prided himself on designing beautiful and very playable course layouts and the Bald Head Island Golf Club offers golfers a chance to experience a classic George Cobb design. By working with the natural habitat of the island, you’ll find this course provides unmatched natural beauty and wildlife. So much a part of nature, many holes throughout this course are sidled next to present habitats of indigenous animals. It isn’t unusual to view graceful herons in their undisturbed surroundings.
The Bald Head Island Golf Club sits on the private island of Bald Head, just miles off the Cape Fear River. Guests wishing to play this course must travel to Southport and take the 30 minute ferry ride to the island. Once there, you’ll be chauffeured in a golf cart to the sprawling course. Golfers will experience some of the best golf along the Carolina coast, as this course was awarded a prestigious 4 ½ stars from “Golf Digest’s Places to Play.” The course holds a spot near the top 20 percentile of courses in difficulty and has a course rating of 74.3 as well as a slope rating of 139. Don’t be deterred by this if you aren’t able to make it onto a golf course or range except on the weekends; Golfers of all experience levels find the Bald Head Island Club course able to play on many different levels and can prove very playable from the forward tees. Brad Faxon, one of the most successful players on the PGA tour through the 1990s set the course record, achieving a 65 from the back tees while battling 20 knot winds. He managed to make birdie on the challenging 460-yard uphill slope of the 18th hole. The wind proves an essential element along this course, often reaching 15 to 20 knots on a calm day. It has been known to reach 30-knots throughout the winter.
The peak season on the island begins in May and lasts through August, as this is when the majority of residents who call Bald Head Island their second home arrive. Be sure to check out the well-stocked Pro Shop at the golf club. You’ll find a wide selection of top-of-the-line sportswear and equipment. Other features include the oceanside tennis courts, large swimming pool and a delicious variety of restaurants. Relax in the lounge, or dine in the members-only grille or elegant dining room.
